I'm reading the Odyssey, go figure (for a class, in Greek)! Well, if you do decide to skip the rest of the Iliad, might I suggest that you read the 24th (last) book before you give up on it? It always gets me crying, and it is one of the most touching pieces of lit I have ever read without being overly sentimental. Maybe a different translation might work out better for you?
p.s. I'm not crazy about battle descriptions either, I usually sort of fast-track through them in books, so I get where you are coming from!
