Haven't you ever had a physically defective book? I bought one earlier this year - an expensive hardback - and three months later a quarter of the pages just fell out; they hadn't been properly glued into the spine. Waterstones replaced it for another copy without question, even though I didn't have the receipt. Good customer service there.
