On my somewhat more realistic scale, if 1 is completely unreadable and 10 is a good trade paperback or hardcover with good paper/printing, I'd give vanilla e-ink Vizplex a solid 6. I'd give the slightly inferior touchscreen ones more like a 5.5.
If you work with it enough, you can pretty easily lower your standards to the point where using it isn't quite so offensive. So don't lose hope completely. If you've relied on hype and stuff to convince you to get a device, it's easy to be disappointed at first.

I don't disagree with this at all, very well said. I'm actually at the point now where I read so much on mass market paperbacks and eink that trade paperbacks and hardcovers are almost uncomfortable to my eyes, but that's just what I'm used to. Eink was such an easy transition since the background isn't much off from a mass market.
