I use portable drives that I've salvaged from my old laptops. If the hard drive is in good condition, I buy cheap USB enclosures on eBay for them. I have one for backing up my netbook and another with just ebook and music files on it.

I've done the same with larger drives from my old desktops but I'm retiring a couple of those because the capacity is so small and to save space.
