It's a bit strange, really. Ken Follett mainly writes "thrillers" (he wrote "Capricorn One", which I'm sure you've seen the movie of, about a "faked" mission to Mars?). He just happens to have also written "Pillars of the Earth", which is a complete contrast to his usual output, and absolutely wonderful. There aren't many authors who can write in two such completely different genres.
