In general academic journal articles that I have read have been easy to read with the reflow option; they haven't been table or pic heavy, however, so it might depend on what sort of articles you have to read. I can't recall uploading an article written in columns, however, so I don't know how that would turn out. Download the Sony guide to making custom PDF's for your reader (you can probably find it somewhere on this site and / or on the Sony reader site.) I have used it to make custom PDF's from MS Powerpoint slides, which are great to study from on my reader.
