I don't know about your first problem - with charging (though I've noticed people have said a wall charger sometimes helps with charging problems?) - but I've had the same trouble with ADE and a Mac.
(Please note, there are other people on these boards a lot more tech-savvy than I am, so there might be an easier solution to this problem, but this was my experience, and I hope it might help!)
You don't need to install anything on your Sony (unless you need the firmware update for reading ePub, which as far as I'm aware you'll need to use a Windows computer for.) With a Mac, ADE isn't going to recognize your reader and move your files for you, but you can drag and drop them. There should be a folder in your documents labeled Digital Editions, where you'll find book files.
What I think you do need to do is authorize your reader to your ADE account, so that you'll be able to use the files. For this, I borrowed a Windows computer, installed ADE on it, plugged in my reader, and was prompted to authorize it. So I did, and then I went back to my Mac, moved the files to the reader by drag-and-dropping, and was able to read them.
There are probably other ways to do this, but this was the one that worked for me.
