Actually, I think it's all about controlling perceived value. Publishers need the marketplace to perceive the value of their works to be at a level that still brings in profits. I suspect they'd be far happier if Kindle prices were advertised as <strike>$20</strike> $9.99 (You save $10.01!).*

The problem is consumers developing a mindset in which they think that hot new titles are only worth $10. If you don't think they're worth that, then wait for the paperback.

*[Edit]Bah, having said that I just checked and see that this is exactly how Amazon is advertising Kindle books now. Not having a Kindle I rarely look at them, though don't remember seeing that before.
