I read on another forum that B&N had 400,000 ready to ship in the first wave, but exceeded that number greatly. This person claimed to have heard it from a B&N employee (corporate, not retail), but who knows how reliable that is.
Also, there are probably a lot of new nook owners who don't know about MobileRead or aren't inclined to go looking for discussion forums. *shrug*
