I was very happy with my Kindle 1, and now very happy with my Kindle 2 (the Kindle 1 now belongs to my husband, who renamed it "librum mirabilum" which means "miraculous to read" in Latin. (Any misspellings are my fault; I don't speak latin so I don't retain its spellings very well).)
Anyway.
Those 1 star reviews on Amazon are mostly fossils that date back to the Kindle's first release--from people who hate the idea of books you can't sniff or a few more sophisticated people who hate DRM, but who had, for the most part, never laid a finger on a Kindle and didn't have the faintest idea whether it did its job well or not. Once you think the DRM issue over, check for reviews by people who actually own it--I find those are more helpful when it comes to trying to figure out whether a product will work for me.
