I actually prefer using photographs, but since I'm always the one in our family taking the pictures, there are precious few of yours truly, and none I consider suitable at present as a avatar.

I like it when people use real photos. Putting a picture to the words give a feeling of the person in a way that you can't get, IMO, from symbols alone.
