As mentioned before, the books basically retell and enhance the anime series. The anime series is a fusion of three unrelated series that were combined into three different Robotech sagas. This was done to provide enough episodes for syndication.

For me, the books read much smoother than the anime, and provide greater depth than the anime. For example, in the first book we see what happened when the giant ship (that eventually became the SDF-1) crashed on Earth, a part only briefly mentioned in the anime.

I'd seen a little Robotech on television, but I didn't become a fan until I read first of the books. Soon, I'd read the entire series.
