Hmm, I double-checked with Google and it appears I am wrong, and that there is still a compatibility layer for GDI, but without any gimmicks (apparently not enough to make HP GDI printers work properly). Vista's new printing protocol is called "Printing Path XPS", which isn't much supported by printers yet.
