Both Kindle and Sony Reader are using Adobe's Mobile Acrobat library to display PDF files.

They own all the rights to PDF formatting, features and so on. I guess, in a sense all of the top ereaders with PDF functionality (Kindle, Sony, iRex etc) have to strike a deal with Adobe at some point
