I told my mom about this and she said it was a popular song (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Jordan), but that it was already a "saying" her mother's generation (20's - 30's) was using before the song. She doesn't remember when it was started, but that everyone just used it in answer to the question, "Is anybody home?"
