I had problems with my firmware update, but it was only a matter of misunderstood directions. It only takes 3-5 minutes for me and I've gone back to my original and back to newer firmware many times in my tests.
I will expand upon the directions that WireLession has provided:
1. Charge your battery up to full for best results - at no time during my flash did I take out the battery.
2. Be sure to format the SD card with the utility provided with the download. Make sure you format the card with FAT32.
3. Before you do anything else, copy the MLO file to the SD card, alone.
4. Copy the EBOOTSD.nb0 file to the SD card.
5. Copy the nandboot.raw and NK.bin files to the SD card.
6. With the device OFF, insert the SD card with the firmware files on it.
7. There is a SMALL HOLE above the USB OTG port. Inside is a little button that resets the device. It is also used to update the device. Use a paperclip, or thin object that can fit into the hole easily and use the object to HOLD THE RESET BUTTON DOWN. Don't let go (you can actually feel the button press - before you try any of this try pressing the reset button yourself a few times - with the power off - to get the feel for it).
8. Press the Power button on the top of the device and HOLD IT.
9. In the top right of the screen, and scrolling down from there, you will see messages begin to display indicating that the firmware has begun to flash. REMOVE THE OBJECT FROM THE RESET BUTTON HOLE AND REMOVE YOUR FINGER FROM THE POWER BUTTON.
You will see it copy the firmware and do all it needs to do and that should do it. Let me know if you have any other questions.
