I was curious so I did a trademark search at the USPTO. Here's the query:

and it turns out Sony has three trademarks on the word 'Reader', two in the hardware reading devices category and one in the software reading applications and 'online retail store services featuring electronic books and electronic book reading device' categories. The joys of being a big corporation with lawyers...

Btw, that last TM is going to be published for opposition starting tomorrow, so Amazon, B&N and others have 30 days from tomorrow to file an opposition if they think it's worth their time!
