(Some of the Saki short stories, perhaps, or the Dickens Uncommercial Traveller essays, or possibly even something by Edgar Wallace.)
In the absence of anything such, can anyone recommend a well-produced Mobipocket book (free or commercial)? Something that shows off the reader to an advantage? I've waded through some dozen free books from their site, but seen nothing that makes me want to give away a Mobipocket book as a present.

Try
http://www.memoware.com/ for free stuff. Fictionwise has decently formatted .pdf books. Haven't tried any of the ones there in the Mobipocket format yet. Hard to say if the publisher does the Mobipocket formating or if Fictionwise does it with publisher approval.
