Samba is open source software that implements the SMB protocol used by Microsoft networking, and allows *nix boxes to be peers and domain controllers on Windows networks.

I used it at a former employer to allow folks to access file systems on my Solaris servers as mounted shares on Windows, instead of using FTP to get files to and from the machine.
