It seems that the Connect software isn't exactly robust and gets lost easily. I would say that I've had the stuck download problem on about a third of the books that I have bought. Typically, I exit the program, start it back up and can download by going to my account/purchases. Once I tried several times and wasn't successful, then managed to download without a problem a half hour later. My guess is they have either network problems, or server problems and the Connect software can't recover from any unexpected events.

IMPO, the Connect software and connect store have all the hallmarks of software farmed out to consultants, i.e. software that is not well thought out and just works well enough to pass the initial sign-off. I say this as a long time programmer and one time consultant. Another sign of this has been the lack of meaningful updates to the software since they went live. One minor bug fix in eight months with no rumors about any upcoming enhancements? Not a good sign. iTunes, a very mature product gets updates about once a quarter, with enhancements a couple times a year.
