Lagginess should have been anticipated. It was in all the few early demos, and B&N conveniently did a lot of scene cutting in their marketing videos to hide something. I even remember commenting here how much faster the Alex Reader was than the Nook. Of course, people will eventually say "well it's still faster than going to the store and pulling the book off the shelf and waiting in line to purchase it" in order to defend it.
