The bootloader can not be damaged or changed during a firmware upgrade because it is in the protected FLASH boot segment. It is true that an aborted upgrade will leave you with a useless device UNTIL a successful firmware load is accomplished, but the bootloader will still be available to do the firmware load. It *may* be difficult to get the battery to charge with an aborted firmware load, but it is still possible to boot the bootloader running from a USB charging source. This scenario has been repeated over and over again on the BeBook( yet another Jinke/Hanlin device) support forum.
