Let me see if I can help on this one (although I may be well off the mark).
In England there are two meanings for the word 'pants'.
One is trousers, which is used in some places in the North of England, and the other is 'underpants' which is used pretty much everywhere else (especially the South)
Now, could it be that 'pants' in this instance means underpants?
