I must respectfully disagree; I've been using touch-screen devices for 20-odd years, right from the original Palm machines, have never used a screen protector, and have never had a scratched screen.

The key thing is never, ever, to leave the stylus lying around. Take it out of its slot, use it, then put it back again. What scratches screens is getting bits of hard grid embedded in the soft plastic of the stylus tip.
