I had the same problem and I contacted Microsoft support. This is what they told me.
To resolve this issue we have two methods.
Method 1.
Please contact the E-books vendor from which you have purchased the E-books and provide them the list of E-books you have purchased and request them to provide you the Old Passport ID __ with which you have purchased those E-books. If they have the information about your Old Passport ID in their database then they will be glad to provide you the Old Passport ID. Then using the Old Passport ID, you could activate the Reader installed on your computer and would be able to download the E-books.
Method 2.
If the vendor is unable to provide you the Old Passport ID. Then the only option is to use the new Passport ID __. Please contact the E-books vendor and provide them the new Passport ID ___ and request them to transfer the association of the E-books you have purchased using the Old Passport ID __ to the New Passport ID ____.
I contacted BooksonBoard and they could not reset my books, nor could they tell me what my old information was. Fictionwise and eharlequin reset my books so I could download them again.
Freeing your LIT books is probably the easiest option.
