Your mention of Steinbeck prompted me to re-read Cannery Row - my favorite Steinbeck - I had forgotten the lyrical prose he used to describe the tide pools on the Monterey coast - and the stinking sardine canneries. He could truly transform a nightmarish town full of oddballs & freaks into a fairy-land of sorts.
