Apparently these particular publishers are going for the marketing model of:

more sales (even if free) == better bestseller positioning == more sales

Rather than whining that ebooks cut into the overpriced hardback sales (not here, I would have waited for the paperback, but bought the higher priced ebook if available on release day ... by the time a postponed ebook comes out, I'll have forgotten about the book and just read what I already have in my TBR stack (plus by that point, could get a library or buy used, etc.).

On some recent books, Sony has had them for free a week earlier than Amazon, as well.
