If they do remove LRF, that's crummy because it works so much better than ePUB on the Reader (headers and justification).
There is a possible reason: If the upgrade is based on reformatting of the internal memory, etc. (and not a hardware upgrade), then some earlier comments here suggested that the 500's limited memory would be very tight to include firmware support all of these formats. Given Sony's move to ePub and their intention to allow purchased books to be reloaded in this format, they could possibly ditch lrf/lrx support to make the 500 upgrade feasible.

Just speculating, though.
