Mirasol uses film above mirrors that has an iridescent quality similar to butterfly wings- it show a different color depending on the position of the "wing"/lense.

What mirasol does is change the position of each of these little butterfly wings so that the light reflected from the mirrors in then refracted by the "wings" so that you see a different color.

They claim they can produce colors without filters but to me their little lenses are the filter so.....

The colors to me on a mirasol display seem a bit washed out

It is less power intensive so as they say it may be possible for a consumer device to reach e-ink type battery life even with a mirasol diplay showing video- I'd be impressed if they got it done by the end of next year.
