Possibly it's a more complicated upgrade than plug in-->run software-->unplug.

Or there's a chance for a high rate of failure or user error, and they figure it's cheaper to do it themselves than it is to man customer service and go through the troubleshooting steps over the phone with a non-computer savvy consumer.
