There are other choices, they may require some work but the choices are there. Most folks don't have the concerns that our small group of tech savvy members have. There are Kindle owners quite happily downloading all of their content from Amazon just as there are Sony owners using the Sony store. At one time, I was pretty happy downloading more expensive books for my Palm from Peanut Press.

Kindle owners can't even take advantage of the libraries that offer ebooks.

Not exactly true. There are are a number of Kindle owners who are dowlading books form the library to use on their Kindles. Granted the number of books available is smaller and the books have to be "fixed" for Kindle use but it is possible.

Amazon doesn't carry everything and its likely they won't subsidize books forever as they do now, As competition in the reader market heats up they will have to keep reducing the price of the Kindle and then make more money on the content. The writing is on the wall

*No one* carries everything but you're more likely to find it on Amazon than anywhere else, especially if it's non public domain material.
As far as how long they will subsidize books, who knows, Right now it's like a long ebook sale and I, for one, am taking advantage of the great pricing. Since I know how to liberate my ebooks for use on other devices my pocketbook is very happy.
