And if I really want something from Amazon I can always buy it from their store and strip the DRM off. That's a pain, of course, but it's less of a pain than it would be as a Kindle owner who had to do that for ANYTHING he wanted to buy outside of Amazon's eBook store.

You miss the point that most Kindle owners for the most part, don't *have* to go outside the Kindle store for content. Why do you think the apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch and now Kindle for PC have people so excited... it's because Amazon has the content and best pricing (more often than not) and they now have access.
