Note that, as it looked from the photos of the unit, the aspect ratio is not the 3:4 one you have on other units. So the 7.1 inch figure makes it seem "more larger" than it actually is. This unit (doing a little high school math) will have a screen size of roughly 3.6 by 6.1 inches. But a "real" 7.1 inch screen-- meaning one keeping the 3:4 aspect ratio of other e-paper readers-- would have a resolution of 768x1024 and a screen size of 4.6 by 6.1 inches. So you are losing a full inch of screen width from what is implied by the listed diagonal measurement.
It is not designed to be a 3:4 or 4:3 screen. It is designed to allow you to see a partial page of a PDF document in landscape mode without the bulk and crappyness of a Kindle DX. (In other words, it is designed to read two columns of text in landscape mode.) It is really a good design if the software is good. Current Sony models have terrible landscape support because they grey out the text on the part of the page adjacent to the part you are reading. It is a simple fix if sony would just do it.

In portrait mode it will allow you to read single column books but the page will be longer than tradition Sony readers or K and K2. Current models use 600 pixels wide (portrait) and 800 pixels high (landscape). The 900 will extend that to 600 pixels wide (portrait) and 1024 pixels high (landscape). That is a 28 percent increase in landscape viewing screen which should greatly improve viewing of two column text in landscape mode.
