This is completely unfounded speculation but, perhaps OD has inked a deal in secret to be bought by a major competitor like Sony who would have a vested interest in not supporting mobi and they are beginning the process of phasing out non-ePub support while the accountants go over the monetary details

Recently I was involved in a buyout, we worked on buyout related tasks for almost 3 months before the deal was public. So it's not unreasonable, just, unfounded heh.
