B&N has said that the nook will support ePub both Adobe DRMed and B&N DRMed, which makes it fairly open as you will be able to buy ebooks from any ebookseller who sells ePub. Most ebooksellers are supporting the Adobe flavor; whether B&N will sell just its own flavor or both flavors or eventually shift to the Adobe flavor remains to be seen.
As to negating the price disadvantage, the answer is yes and no because sometimes B&N is the lowest price -- except for Amazon -- and other times another ebookseller is lower priced, again except for Amazon. Occasionally Amazon is not the lowest priced. (Of course, no one knows for how long Amazon will keep on the same path of selling some ebooks at a loss or for minimal profit.)
