In addition to illustrations, the amount of formatting and the ebook format are also a factor. Even plain text books can take up quite a bit of space.

I have the Project Gutenberg version of Silas Marner, and the original plain text file is 402kb in size. After formatting it and then saving it as a PDF formatted for my Sony Reader it grew to 1.1mb, this despite having no illustrations.

I don't worry too much about the size of an ebook. The combination of internal memory and an SD card gives me plenty of room for all of my ebooks. The main reason that I save my ebooks as PDFs, despite their large resulting size, is that I can be sure that they will appear on my reader exactly the way I want it to.
