Unfortunatley, the most common is the other way around, people have taken a good short story and made it into a horrible, horrible movie adaptation.

I think first and most about Maximum Overdrive, which was inspired by the somewhat decent short story Trucks by Stephen King.

The really bad part about it is of course that the script for MO was done by Stephen himeself, and not only that, he directed it as well.
