Someone summed it up very nicely. If you like to use your phone or computer just the way it comes out of the box, buy Apple. If you like to customize, tweak, or need more functionality, then buy something else. I will never buy Apple again after experiencing how limiting even a jailbroken iphone is -- I figured after jailbreaking I could pretty much do anything it, like I could with my previous phones. I was wrong, have since upgraded to another phone and will never look back. But for many people it is most important that Apple's products are easy to use and what they do they usually do relatively well with few hiccups if you stay within Apple's walled garden. To each his own!
