You shouldn't have to format it. Try taking the sd card out and see if a new drive shows up when you plug it in. If not you may have a conflict on your USB drive.

I know I have a problem on my work laptop with it not recognizing (or displaying) certain usb thumb drives. There might be something similar going on with your computer.
