I also thought that having the memory cards would be important. But I have over 260 books on the internal memory & that's way more than enough at the rate at which I read'em. I have some of my cookbook collection on one of my cards, but at this time, don't use the cookbooks very often. I've been acquiring lots of books (fiction, classics)for future use. I've been converting them with Calibre, and when I've got a 'stack', I burn them onto CD. Building my library for when we retire & sail into the sunset. No, the external cards are quite over rated as a necessity, but for those who want to have everything on their device, it's a nice option.
