This works for most words (believe, perceive etc) but there are exceptions (seize, protein).
that is handy too, and more universal than "beoufs-lièvre" (it is easy to remember because it sounds a little bit like "believe" pronounced with a french accent). i don't have trouble with protein, because in french the two vowels are pronounced individually and it's easy to hear how it is spelled.

i love mnemonics, they're so useful for remembering things (not only spelling, in fact). here is a funny one for remembering the order of the planets : "Me Voici, Tout Mouillé, J'ai Suivi Un Nuage Pluvieux." (the first letter of each word corresponds to the first letter of the name of the planet). it means "here i am, all wet, i followed a rainy cloud".
