that just seems unhygienic to me.
(on a side note, good god, it's astounding how long it takes cold water to freeze ! that bad has been in there for hours but the last time i checked it (not long ago) it was still visibly liquid, at least on top.)

Zelda - if you can get one, try a neoprene support bandage. They work marvels when I mess my ankle up. And I've got a couple of gel packs that can be strapped to it with plastic braces when I do it really badly, but they do rule out wearing things like trousers or boots.

thanks, i'll look into the neoprene thingy. currently i've got my ankle things on it and they certainly feel like they're compressing it.

it's not actually my ankle which is hurt, it's the side / top of my foot, a bit further down than the ankle. the part called the "neck of the foot" (cou-du-pied) in french. more or less where the arrow is pointing, but slightly towards the outside :
