The Java version of Mobipocket does have HTML support, but I don't think it is as strong as the Desktop Reader version (not really sure though). You could open a HTML document with Mobipocket, but our current HTML viewer will be the default association, so you would have to change the registry for that. You could probably also create your own extension like .mhtml and make Mobipocket open those...
I think that TXT files should also work.
Binary formats like CHM or PDF will need to go through the (free) Mobipocket converter software to turn them into .mobi files.

I'll try some of those formats when I'm back in the office Monday.
