He probably started to feel comfortable with his new surroundings. Ferrets will only go where they feel safe. That's also why they usually pick corners (so nothing can pounce them from behind).

Yeah, you can't be passive aggressive when training a ferret. You have to pluck them up right as you see them going to the corner and set them down in their litterbox. In some cases holding them there until they do their business. With any luck they'll eventually get the hint.
