L.E. Modesitt Jr's "The Parafaith War" is an excellent book about race, warfare, religion, and a bunch of other things.
It's sequel "The Ethos Effect" is preachy, didactic, contentious, annoying and should never have seen the light of day.
Of course, that's just my opinion. YMMV.
