Another author that does scifi / fantasy well that I've always enjoyed is Ben Bova. I especially like his Orion series, except for the last book #5 ORION AMONG THE STARS.

In book number 5 the phrase "deus ex machina" takes on new meaning as Orion actually DOES become a "god" and solves the whole mess of the entire novel series. The plot plods along and you realize as the remainder of the last pages are growing quite thin. You wonder how this is going to end. A snazzy hook for another novel? A sudden plot twist that skillfully wraps up all the situations?
NO.
Orion becomes a god, literally forces all parities to sit at a table and won't let them leave until they hash out their differences. I actually moaned so loud when I started to realize what was going down that my wife panicked and asked if I was ill. I almost was. I had not been that disappointed with a book ending in years.
BAD BEN! BAD BEN! BAD WRITER!
