I don't own a Kindle, nor do I use Mobipocket in any fashion. However, I'll take a stab.

Look for kindlepid.py which is a program to transform your Kindle (hardware or iPhone, apprently) serial number into a Mobipocket PID.

It may be an oversight (likely) or perhaps the contracts are simply different. Most of the players are fairly new to enforcing this particular limitation so there is probably a lot of scrambling.
