Part of the problem with all of this is that the B&N folks on their forums are answering questions as if all of this were new. Thus the situation above. I suspect it's because this is all new to them. They don't have the expertise (or assume the audience doesn't) for a full, detailed answer, so rather than give a misleading answer, they fall back to "no".

Once the device is out, believe me, MR will have the technical ins, outs, cans, and can'ts in short order. There's enough knowledge and expertise around to clear up all of the question marks, including whether or not you can port Google Maps to the thing. (I'm just saying....)
