Can I ask how old the Older machines are.

I was planning on using XP mode on a three year old machine, but it apparently doesn't support Virtualisation on the Chip whice I believe is a prerequisite for using XP Mode.

Thats a bit of a pain, as XP mode was one of the reason I went for Pro and not Home premium on that machine.
