It is proprietary, developed and controlled by Adobe. But being the only DRM scheme up to now, it's relatively widespread and "standard".

Not "generic" ePUB, but Adobe's DRM for ePUB. The ePUB standard does not define a preferred DRM and in principle any company could develop its own DRM and it would still be ePUB-conforming. Adobe came up with the first DRM and any device that supports DRM ePUB in fact supports Adobe's DRM ePUB (because it's the only existing one). Now B&N have developed a different DRM, and the chaos will start
